We have something very special here at Pomfret Springs Farm: a
TWENTY-ACRE LABYRINTH PATH!
Our Labyrinth is unique, not only because of its size, but in its character. It is both a hiking trail and a meditation path, designed to follow a classical labyrinth pattern. But unlike most labyrinths, which are room or garden-sized, ours measures 1.5 miles into the center (3
miles if you walk back out along the path.) We believe ours to be the
largest Labyrinth in the world and hope someday for it to be fully
functioning. It has taken Cynthia four years to design and carve out
this unique meditation trail. Because it is in the woods on uneven terrain, cutting
the path has been difficult and costly. It is still rough but was finally walkable last year. This year we've planned big improvements. We are widening and levelling it, carving out meditation areas, and repairing drainage problems. Someday we hope it can also be a giant art show with sculptures and art installations along the trail. Stay tuned!
.
Things you should know about walking our Labyrinth:
Unfortunately, this year the trees have sustained a lot of storm damage and it will take us a while to recover, so... The path is currently rather rough. You may have to step over downed trees. Stay tuned, though. Lynch Land Services has cut up the worst treefall and is helping us with path clearing and land repair. We hope to have it in good shape by early summer.
Otherwise...
PERMISSION: In order to make this Labyrinth available to others, it is vital that our privacy be respected. This is a private space on private land. It is used by Cynthia's retreat clients, who do not wish to be disturbed. That said, we would like others to enjoy this beautiful space at other times. Please contact Cynthia through this website for permission to walk the Labyrinth.
AVAILABILITY: Our
plan is to open the Labyrinth to visitors on Sundays for quiet meditation
walks during good weather from Memorial Day through Foliage Season in
October. Any other times must be by appointment. If the Labyrinth is open, there will be a sign out front.
COST: Because of our costs, we suggest a $10 donation per person. Of course, we would love it if you are able to donate more.
WHO CAN WALK IT: Anyone who is fit enough for a two mile hike. This walk is not open to very young children, say under the age of 8. It is not wheelchair or walker appropriate. There are steep overlooks and uneven places. Be aware.
WHAT TO BRING: To
walk this trail, you will want good walking or hiking shoes and perhaps a walking stick.
(We have some sticks you can borrow.) Parts of the trail are steep and uneven (no climbing though.) Water is OK, food not so OK. Please pack everything out that you bring in.
DOGS: Its not that we don't like dogs but.... Because this is intended as a walking meditation, we prefer that you leave Fido home. If you must bring your dog (because you are travelling or something) then please don't let it run loose. Not everyone likes friendly doggie pestering when they are meditating.
HOW TO BEHAVE: This is a private, not a public place. Our Labyrinth is intended as a Quiet meditation area, a sacred space for contemplation. Please act reverently, as you would in a Chapel. We ask that you walk silently if possible. Listen to the birds and the sound of the rushing brook.
